I feel that what made the original line so appealing to me back then ware the tribal themes and elements these characters portrayed. The new sets on the other hand lost somewhat a bit of that complexity to them. If the characters didn't look so generic and basic that was gen 2, (don't get me wrong they had 'something' going with it), and took a bit more from the concept art and better advertising, next gen kids could have took it in droves. And I say "could have" as a loose term, BIONICLE was a sort of 'lighting in a bottle' after all.
So the idea here would be the Matoran would no longer need to where Kanohi as an essential part of their anatomy, but as a symbolic and ritualist aesthetic and for protection. Their faces will still be unique with respective designs and colors, and throw in some garments just to humanize them a bit when not focused on the Toa.
So there you have it. Weather or not generation 3 will happen or not, at least the community has the imagination to keep it alive and well.
Let's hope to Lego they make better decisions the next time around, but for now, endless possibilities are still out there.

Nice designs. And I like how you made the Matoran unique based on their respective environments and having masks as hats. Take notes, LEGO.
